Managers Dont Have All the Answers
âManagers Donât Have All the Answersâ Managers are expected to be well-informed, well-organized and ready to answer all the questions! But is it really like that in reality? They are all just people after all, with all the virtues and flaws each of us have. So, do managers really have to have all the answers?Have you ever heard of the term âthe iceberg of ignoranceâ? Letâs start with the premise that front-line supervisors should know how to fix all the front-line problems. Should they, actually?Regardless of the number of people in a team, you have a few levels of workers there. And those who are in the lower positions are the ones who are majorly aware of those front-line problems.Thatâs natural because they are in the busiest level of a job. As one gets promoted, new duties come, which decreases the knowledge on these problems on daily basis. To put it shortly, the higher the position, the less is the knowledge on front-line problems. With that having said, how can anyone expect that managers have all the answe rs? It takes a lot for any team to be successful and work well, and in this article, we shall reveal all there is about being a manager. You will see why managers actually donât need to know all the answers.Besides that, you will see why some managers still tend to have all the answers and how good that is. Moreover, you will find out what to do when a quick solution is needed and what does it take to become a successful manager.WHY MANAGERS NEEDNâT KNOW ALL THE ANSWERS?As a manager, one is expected to be capable of dealing with all the problems. However, there are some problems which are trickier and the solution is not so clear. Do managers need to solve it despite that? Yes, but by using a wider approach rather than trying to act alone.Whereas back then admitting that you donât know something was shameful and unacceptable, nowadays things are way different. Hereâs why:By admitting that he/she doesnât have all the answers a manager shows that after all he/she is only a h uman being and equal among others. Not knowing all the answers gives lots of chances for a manager to learn more, dig deeper and expand and upgrade his/her knowledge. When a manager doesnât have an answer that can be an opportunity for other team members to come up with some ideas and solutions. So, at this point, you may wonder what is the right amount of knowledge a manager should have. The answer is- enough! Enough to put him/her in a position to make some important decisions but still leaving space for new ideas and bits of knowledge to come. The purpose of a team working and team building is in learning from each other. Yes, there are different positions in teams, low and high, more and less responsible, but a team is a machinery which works well only if all parts are in it. Even without the smallest one, the machinery wouldnât work properly.Thatâs why it is very important that team members constantly work together. They should improve and learn from each other. A manager sho uld serve as a coordinator who will, acting this way, give a positive example of a good team behavior.WHAT IF A MANAGER HAS ALL THE ANSWERS?The simplest answer to this would be- the manager is in the wrong way! Having all the answers doesnât make you the smartest person in your team. Quite the opposite. A manager who thinks he/she has all the answers is actually a person who doesnât listen to the other team members. When one acts that way, this is what he/she is saying to team members:Iâm smarter than all of you.I donât need your help.Just put your heads down and listen to me, do what I tell you without question.Regardless of your knowledge and expertise, Iâm the one whose opinion and decisions are the most important.Yeah, you will agree that these sentences sound terrible, but thatâs the truth. These are just some of the messages a manager with all the answers is sending to his/her colleagues. Such behavior is quite the opposite of how should a team look like. By acting this way, a manager alienates and disengages from the team, and that leads to disaster. Some managers believe that this exclusion from the rest of the team by sending others message that you have all the answers will make people think that he/she is a smart and powerful manager. But, luckily, that kind of a manager rarely remains in a position of a leader. That kind of behavior is often just a shield of protection. Its a mask behind which one actually tries to hide the feeling of insecurity. In reality, a good manager is the one that cooperates with team members.Just to make one thing clear. There are situations where instant answers are needed and a manager somehow tends to be the first figure other team members consult. Some situations require prompt and efficient answer which will solve the issue as soon as possible, without numerous meetings or some wide discussion. Such situations are not the same to what we previously described.Managers will provide quick answers on occasions where they are necessary for solving the problem as fastest as possible. However, looking in some general way, managers should listen to team members. A team is all about cooperating, exchanging thoughts and experiences, growing the big idea by contributing from multiple sides.Furthermore, we shall also discuss these situations where a manager has to think of a solution as soon as possible. Moreover, we shall describe what does it take to be a successful manager. WHAT TO DO WHEN A MANAGER NEEDS TO GIVE AN INSTANT ANSWER?As we mentioned, there are some situations where the quick solution is necessary. If team members cannot solve it, the final word will come from a manager. But if even a manager is not sure what is the right thing to do, but something still has to be done- what to do?Some managers will admit, which will definitely increase their credibility among colleagues. That will motivate others to suggest some solutions. Like we said, admitting that you donât have an answer w ill open lots of possibilities both for you and other team members.Still, whether one admits or not, the problem has to be solved. Making that very first step in such situations is usually very hard. But as soon as one does it, things will start moving in a positive direction. Hereâs what managers usually do when this is the case.1. Define the challenge preciselyMeet your enemy- thatâs what this is! Say it out loud! Of course, donât go through the company literally yelling that you donât have an answer, but pronounce the sentence so that you can hear it for the beginning.Even if a manager hasnât got an instant answer, he/she should be able to ask better questions! The right questions will significantly speed up the whole process of problem-solving.A manager should have a deeper understanding of a problem but trying to figure out what he/she knows about it and what not. This will significantly help by at least defining things into two categories- what is familiar and what i s not.2. Use other peopleâs experience and expertiseUnless itâs a business which is something never seen before, the odds are that someone was in the similar or same situation.Besides experience and expertise, a person which might be of help in this situation has to be someone who has a good understanding of it and the ability to explain things precisely and quickly. Beware of faux experts which may make the problem even worse.Look for opinions from those who are willing to share their experience for the sake of helping and sharing their knowledge.3. Ask the right questionsThis goes way beyond- what am I gonna do now? Ask as many âwh-â and any other questions as possible. The deeper you dig into the core of a problem, the better are the chances that you will come up with something.Who can help? Why did the problem occur? When did it start? Where to look for solutions? Start from the simplest and proceed to the more complicated ones. Sooner than you realize you will be just a step away from having the final answer.4. Take a chance and do somethingIf a manager has some rough idea what might be of help but is not sure whether that will bring positive results, what to do? Give it a try! Even if this is not the most perfect solution, still it will give you the next directions for solving the issue.Of course, donât risk just for the sake of it or when you can make more damage than good. Feel free to take some step and the next one will be easier because the directions will be at least a bit clearer than the step before. As we said, itâs mostly up to managers to give the final decision, and these tips can be of help. Routine and self-confidence usually come with time, and new managers are always in more challenging situations than those who are already in this position for quite some time. But, when one is ready to learn, he/she is on a good way to become a quality manager. This rule goes both for newbies and experienced managers. HOW TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL MANAGER?New managers usually deal with more challenges. Getting promoted gives one lot of mixed feelings. It is flattering to know that you are in the position to lead the team and be in charge of some big decisions. But thereâs also the pressure one feels, that all the answers have to be ready from day one.A newbie shouldnât despair, as he/she is not alone in this. Itâs quite a natural feeling. One has to learn how to mask the feeling of not being ready to cope with all the upcoming situations, to pretend that he/she has all the answers even if thatâs not the case.New managers struggle with feelings of incompetence even if they are highly experienced and full of knowledge. Here are some helpful bits of advice on how one can deal with all the sets of expectations.1. Know your knowledgeFor the beginning, you should be aware of what you know and what you donât know. That will help you realize what are the situations where you can give quick solutions and what are the ones w here you will have to learn. You donât have to be instantly capable of solving anything and everything from day one no human being is.After all, if someone decided to promote you to this position, that certainly means you have some valuable skills and bits of knowledge, as well as the good predisposition to deal with issues. Thatâs should be a motivational starting point for you.2. Let your freshness be your advantageBeing new in some field brings many new possibilities, both to you and your team. Sometimes a slight pressure can trigger innovative solutions and answers. Imagine how the pioneers in some industries felt like. If they didnât dare to try, we would never have some amazing and intriguing discoveries. Lots of positive things happened because people decided to think outside the box. Donât be afraid of some unusual solutions.3. Keep on askingGive your team an example that constant inquiry is a positive quality. That way both you as a new manager and your team members will feel more confident when the problem comes. Moreover, the feeling of being exposed when the answer is not instantly visible will not be so intense.By asking questions you encourage team members to come to you with ideas, to exchange them, and that way you create a positive atmosphere between all of you. After all, a team is about exchanging knowledge and experience.4. Make space for other membersEach team consists of people of different levels of knowledge and experience, which means that some of them have better chances over the others to come up with a solution. And when we say others, a manager also belongs to the group.By giving other an opportunity to express themselves a manager creates a healthy working atmosphere where members treat each other with respect. By acting that way, a manager earns more respect from the colleagues.Just go back to the days where you were one of the team members striving to express his/her opinion to the manager. And the happiness that comes w hen a manager used your opinion to fix the issue. Continue that behavior even when you are a manager because that way you encourage people to express their thoughts and ideas.5. âI donât knowâ mottoRepeat this sentence every day, because you will be more and more motivated to look for answers and solutions. Of course, donât go bragging about not knowing anything, as it can be counterproductive. Just admit that even you as a manager are not obliged to know everything at once, that you have to learn more and upgrade yourself. By sharing this very personal feeling with team members, you also show them that you respect and trust them. And when a team knows that, your relationship will become stronger, which will result in more productiveness and success in the future. As you can see being a good manager is actually a set of feelings and behaviors which should be repeated every day. That âday oneâ is never easy, but the sooner one realizes that itâs all about learning and ac quiring new tricks and tips, the sooner one will become a successful manager. But even the experienced managers should follow these rules, as they can also be in a situation where they donât know something. Including yourself in a team, rather than excluding is what managers should do, when looking for answers and solutions.FINAL THOUGHT ON MANAGERS AND ANSWERSRegardless of being an experienced manager or a newbie in the field, or not a manager at all, we do hope that our article was motivating and encouraging for you. After learning why managers donât have to have all the answers at once and why is actually bad to have them all, you became aware of the difference between a good and a bad manager.Above all, we mostly hope that now you realize the true power of âI donât knowâ. Now that you know that not knowing is not a bad thing, you can approach things differently. And, again, thatâs something that can be applied in all situations in life. This sentence should motivate p eople to upgrade and improve themselves, to strive for more. Now that you have all this tips and tricks, try applying them throughout all fields of your life. As the days go by, you will notice numerous positive changes. Life is all about learning and upgrading each and every second, and it doesnât take much to be in the right way.

Who or what is the role of the Inspector in An Ins Essays - Film
Who or what is the role of the Inspector in An Inspector Calls? J.B. Priestley believes that we all have a collective and shared responsibility to look after each other . In 1912 there was a rigid class system and wealthier families would employ servants. Capitalism is an economic system that is based on the private ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange. Socialism is an ideology in which the means of production, distribution and exchange are owned by the community collectively. In the play, the inspector's character is the mouthpiece and authorial voice of Priestly. He is a socialist. The inspector speaks carefully, weightily, and has a disconcerting habit of looking hard at the person he addresses before actually speaking, indicating that the inspector demands respect and is authoritative because he is trying to teach the family a sincere lesson about social responsibility. Hence, when Birling offers the inspector a drink, he refuses, using the excuse, "No, thank you, I am on duty". The inspector is a serio us character and is there to bring truth and reality to the Birling family, the lighting should be pink and intimate until the inspector arrives, then it should be brighter and harsher. The change of lighting in the stage directions signifies how critical he is. In act three, the inspector says, If there's nothing else, we'll have to share our guilt. This line reflects the socialist ideology because the family has to share their guilt with each other and have to help the working classes. In the inspector's speech, he says, And I tell you that the time will come soon when, if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish. Goodnight. Here Priestly uses polysyndeton to add emphasis to the message "in fire and blood and anguish". He also uses the rule of three technique, to emphasise his prophetic meaning . Priestley references World War One using the quote taught in fire and blood and anguish, as there were so many casualties and so m uch blood was spilt. As the play was written after both World Wars and the Russian Revolution, the audience would have agreed with these lines because they would have witnessed, first hand, the disasters of these wars. In the play, the younger generation show that they are more capable of change than the older generation. The younger generation express real sympathy for the working classes and show a critical solidarity for Eva Smith. Towards the end of the play, Sheila and Eric's ability to change means that Priestly can end the play with an element of hope. He is trying to communicate that it is possible to make society better. Without the aspect of faith, the characters would continue making mistakes. Priestley makes the older generation, Mr and Mrs Birling, seem incapable of change. They have little to no sympathy for Eva Smith and are only sorry for her because she died a horrible death. Priestly uses them to represent the old-fashioned ideas. He disagrees with what these represent. Sheila and Eric feel sorry for the working classes and Eva Smith, whereas the older generation, Mr and Mrs Birling, are more capitalist in their views. Thus, in Act one Eric says, He could have kept her on instead of throwing her out. This implies that Eric feels sorry for Eva Smith and is being more sympathetic to the women working for Birling's company. He does not think that it was fair of Birling to fire her. Sheila also sympathises the girl, (rather distressed) Sorry! It is just that I can't help thinking about this girl - destroying herself so horribly - and I've been so happy tonight. Oh, I wish you hadn't told me. Sheila is feeling sorry for the girl and she thinks that the working classes should be treated more fairly. On the other hand, Birling does not feel sorry for them, They'd soon be asking for the earth. Birling's attitude towards the working class women is patronising. He portrays them as frivolous, irresponsible, and immature. This reinforces class superiority and patriarchy. Birling also doesn't take responsibility for his actions, well, don't tell me that

Vertical Integration in Business Organisations
Vertical Integration in Business Organisations Introduction Business organisations exist to make profits. Most business organisations sell their products using distributors or dealers who are well known to the organisations. The existence of these organisations is founded on offering consumer-oriented products to drive sales.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Vertical Integration in Business Organisations specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Products created by the organisations can be raw materials, intermediate items or finished goods. The product creation process often targets a particular group or groups of the population. The buying potential of these groups determines the extent to which a certain product is manufactured. Consequently, the production process is driven by the demand for that item. The manufacture of various products requires varying inputs, which vary from one organisation to another. The complexity of the materials used in the production process is also dependent on the nature of the commodity produced because certain items require more inputs than others. However, the quantities of inputs for the manufacturing process can be regulated by the manufacturers. In addition, the nature of a product determines how the final product is marketed. Consequently, a single product can be manufactured partially or wholly by a particular company. Frequently, companies produce certain products after a thorough evaluation of their capacity to produce a product at ease. Additionally, the cost of production is also put into consideration. Therefore, the company only sets out to produce a certain item if its production is cost effective to the company. Risky ventures or processes that are costly to the company are often foregone. However, it is possible for a company to engage in the creation of raw materials and marketing provided that the company has enough resources to invest. Such a move is what gives rise to company integration as a comp any becomes its own input producer, processor or manufacturer. The company also markets its products in company integration. When a company realizes such achievements, it is said to be vertically integrated. The process of vertical integration is often gradual because a company begins with the units of production that are easy to put together using various methods.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Vertical integration company case Coca-Cola Company Vertical integration entails a companyââ¬â¢s involvement in activities that allow it to control the inputs and outputs. Companies achieve this through employing various production techniques aimed at eliminating input suppliers and output distributors. Companies that are vertically integrated produce products from their basic forms to the consumption stage. These companies are capable of exploiting consumers because t hey control the output entirely. The process of vertical integration is long-term and is mainly achieved after some time if the company operates on a large scale (Joskow 2005). Input production during the integration process involves the company venturing into the production of raw materials. Companies making soft drinks may, for instance, venture in bottling of drinks to reduce the cost of production. The inputs for this process are customised to suit the special needs of the company during the bottling process. It is also possible to determine the required units for processing or manufacturing because the companyââ¬â¢s operations scheduled and every activity is an in-house job. A brief insight on the origin of the soft drink businesses can be achieved by centering on one of the most lucrative and groundbreaking companies in existence (Saltzman, Levy Hilke 1999). In the year 1886, an Atlanta pharmacist who was known as John Pemberton came up with a novel drink by adding flavour ed treacle to aerated water. The beverage was at the outset promoted as a therapeutic beverage, which was put up for sale in a pharmacy for five cents a glass. Asa Griggs Candler, who was a local businessperson, purchased the Coca-Cola brand for $2,300 in the late 1880ââ¬â¢s. Candler later turned out to be the earliest head of the company. Candler, who was a gifted salesperson, transformed the soft drink from a creative piece of work into a business opportunity by publicizing Coca-Cola as a thirst-quenching infusion rather than a therapeutic beverage. This change turned out to be a critical moment for the Coca-Cola Company as well as the entire industry that dealt with aerated beverages (Saltzman, Levy Hilke 1999).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Vertical Integration in Business Organisations specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is essential to give the details of the chronological circumstances of a product and the extent of rivalry within its market. Such details enable the total comprehension of the existing state of affairs and make it possible to foresee the most probable future direction of the aerated soft drink business. Aerated soft drinks comprise a special blend of seasoned syrup and fizzy water. Every drink that is devoid of alcohol, carbon dioxide and milk that is prepared by blending treacle and fizzy water falls under the category of soft drinks (Saltzman, Levy Hilke 1999). The large profit margins realized from the sale of carbonated drinks by the soft drink companies have become sources of contention regarding the extent of rivalry within the soft drink market. The Federal Trade Commission has carried out a number of inspections in the preceding thirty years to establish the sources of the assets in various companies in the soft drink industry. In addition, the Department of Justice has brought several price-fixing cases against some carbonated soft drink companies (Saltzm an, Levy Hilke 1999). In the nineteenth century, there were numerous companies selling several varieties of flavoured carbonated drinks. Most of these drinks appeared as medicinal drinks in their adverts, and their sale was done in normal retail shops and pharmacies. The Coca-Cola Company together with Pepsi Cola were among the first firms to market the carbonated soft drinks on a large scale in the United States. These two companies have greatly invested in popularising their products to create awareness about their products, which continues to date. The companies have grown to be worldwide competing companies with big market shares using forward and backward integration. The integration of the production process is what makes the Coca-Cola Company to price its goods favourably hence giving it an advantage in the soft drink industry. The Coca-Cola Company started with the manufacturing of beverage concentrates and syrups that were mainly used in the manufacture of soft drinks (Fre drix 2009). These products were the basic inputs used in the manufacturing of the soft drink that was commonly referred to as soda after the town of the Coca-Cola Companyââ¬â¢s founder.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More However, the company did not bottle the drink or market it. A different company did the marketing and bottling of the concentrate or the syrup after packaging. The Coca-Cola Companyââ¬â¢s specialization was the production of the concentrates and syrup. Consequently, the company, being the originator and inventor of the idea of the concentrates and syrup, copyrighted the formula of making soda to avoid duplication of the method by other rival companies.à During the early stages, opportunities for forward integration existed. The company could integrate forward by bottling the soda and marketing it. However, the Coca-Cola Company lost those opportunities when it left other companies to bottle its products. It was not clear to the company the best which bottling method would be the most appropriate for its commodity. It was during that period of indecisiveness that the company chose to buy part of the shares of the bottling companies. The acquisition of shares of the bottling comp any was a main breakthrough of the company, which would later become the main task done solely by the company. When a company vertically integrates upwards, it aims at increasing the value of its products. The income generated by a firm through value addition is higher in comparison to the value of the intermediate item or raw material (Williamson 2010). The bottling of the soda in partnership with other bottlers gave the company an opportunity to earn the company higher returns. These returns aided the expansion and dissemination of the company to various parts of the United States and eventually to neighbouring countries. Vertical integration for the Coca-Cola Company was gradual. As the company partnered with bottling companies, it acquired bottling facilities that could be used for its soda. The bottling companies bottled soda for various companies hence making it difficult for a company to customize its soda bottles to suit its tastes and preferences. Nevertheless, the Coca-Col a Company was able to design customized and appealing bottles after establishing its bottling facility. Vertical integration gives a company more flexibility because a company can alter the production process or a product without having to incur extra costs. The convenience of having everything done by a single company is achieved through vertical integration. The global presence of the Coca-Cola Company is highly attributed to the adoption of the vertical integration system. The manufacture of the concentrates and syrup is centralized, and the distribution of the concentrates to various countries where diluting and branding activities take place is efficient. In these countries, the bottling of the soda takes place in bottling plants owned by Coca-Cola. The company uses its trucks to deliver the drinks from the bottling factories to distributors in various locations. The transportation of the soda from the company warehouses to the selected official distributors is thus the sole re sponsibility of the company. Transportation costs are major costs assumed by companies that transport products. Therefore, vertically integrating the provision of transport services using the companyââ¬â¢s trucks or any other mode of transport reduces the cost of hiring the services of other transporting companies. Such extra costs would raise the cost of production and cause the prices of commodities to increase (Allain, Chambolle Rey 2010). The Coca-Cola Company has greatly invested in promoting its brand name through various innovative tactics. These strategies ensure that the company vertically integrates marketing of its products, which maintains the image of the company as a first choice brand. The Coca-Cola Company makes use of adverts to foster brand allegiance among its existing and potential clients, which was initially done by the bottling companies. For example, Coca-Cola emphasizes the use of publicity to establish a lasting brand impression for its merchandise and the entire company. In addition, the company utilizes an integrated marketing consultation approach to depict the brand and maintain it in the minds of existing clients (Hu Chuan 2009). In the past ten years, the Coke Company has used up several billion dollars internationally in the marketing of its products (The Coca-Cola Company 2011). Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s long-standing investment in trade name recognition gave the company immense recognition as the most important brand name in the entire world (Fredrix 2009). Vertical integration causes the company to be involved in all aspects ranging from the production of drinks in the company to the distribution of the final product from the company to the customer through the retailer. The company has gained recognition by sponsoring various events, for example, musical shows such as the ââ¬ËThe American Idolââ¬â¢ (The Coca-Cola Company 2012). Consequently, the company creates a strong brand name from such activities. Conclusion The up ward and downward integration of the Coca-Cola Company helped it grow from a small company to a multinational company. The use of the right approach to business management especially the distribution process and advertising is highly attributed to its success. The companyââ¬â¢s distribution approach of establishing bottling branches in various regions and countries was a key forward leap for the company. The patenting of the companyââ¬â¢s innovation and invention also protected the company from direct competition (Williamson 2010). The ability to carry out various roles was due to the firmââ¬â¢s acquisition of bottling facilities partially under equity holding and later by fully acquiring bottling plants. The use of celebrities in advertising and sponsoring of major events created a good company image resulting in strengthening of the companyââ¬â¢s brand. The promotion methods used by the company also made it a choice soft drink for many people. Therefore, the company wa s successful in vertically integrating its production and distribution process. Cephalopods Facts
Cephalopods Facts Cephalopods are mollusks (Cephalopoda), a class which includes octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus. These are ancient species that are found in all of the worlds oceans, and are thought to have originated about 500 million years ago. They include some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Fast Facts: Cephalopods Scientific Name: CephalopodaCommon Name(s): Cephlapods, mollusks, cuttlefish, octopuses, squids, nautilusesBasic Animal Group: InvertebrateSize: 1/2 inchââ¬â30 feetWeight: 0.2 ounceââ¬â440 poundsLifespan: 1ââ¬â15 yearsDiet: CarnivoreHabitat: All of the oceansPopulation: UnknownConservation Status: Critically Endangered (1 species), Endangered (2), Vulnerable (2), Near Threatened (1), Least Concern (304), Data Deficient (376) Description Cephalopods are highly intelligent, highly mobile ocean-dwelling creatures that are remarkably diverse in size and lifestyle. All of them possess at least eight arms and a parrot-like beak. They have three hearts that circulate blue blood- cephalopod blood is copper-based, rather than iron-based like red-blooded humans. Some cephalopod species have tentacles with suckers for grabbing, camera-like eyes, color-changing skin, and complex learning behaviors. Most cephalopod eyes are quite like humans, with an iris, pupil, lens, and (in some) a cornea. The shape of the pupil is specific to species. Cephalopods are intelligent, with relatively large brains. The largest is the giant squid (30 feet long and weighing 440 pounds); the smallest are the pygmy squid and California lilliput octopus (under 1/2 inch and 2/10 of an ounce). Most live only one to two years, with a maximum of five years, except for nautiluses which can live as long as 15 years. Species There are over 800 living species of cephalopods, loosely divided into two groups called clades: Nautiloidea (of which the only surviving species is the nautilus) and Coleoidea (squids, cuttlefish, octopuses, and the paper nautilus).à The taxonomic structures are under debate. Nautiluses have a coiled shell, are slow-moving, and are only found in deep water; they have more than 90 arms.Squids are by and large torpedo-shaped, fast-moving, and have a thin, flexible internal shell called a pen. The pupils of their eyes are circular.Cuttlefish look and behave like squid but they have stouter bodies and a broad internal shell called a cuttlebone. They navigate by undulating their body fins and live in the water column or on the sea floor. Cuttlefish pupils are shaped like the letter W.Octopuses live mostly in deep water, have no shell, and can swim or walk on two of their eight arms. Their pupils are rectangular. Habitat and Range Cephalopods are found in all of the major water bodies in the world, primarily but not exclusively salt water. Most species live at depths between seven and 800 feet, but a few can survive at depths near 3,300 feet. Some cephalopods migrate following their food sources, a characteristic that may well have allowed them to survive for millions of years. Some migrate vertically every day, spending most of the day in the dark depths hiding from predators and rising to the surface at night to hunt.à Diet Cephalopods are all carnivorous. Their diet varies depending on the species but can include everything from crustaceans to fish, bivalves, jellyfish, and even other cephalopods. They are hunters and scavengers and have several tools to assist them. They grasp and hold their prey with their arms and then break it into bite-sized pieces using their beaks; and they further process the food with a radula, a tongue-like form edged with teeth that scrapes the meat and pulls it into the cephalopod digestive tract. Behavior Many cephalopods, especially octopuses, are intelligent problem solvers and escape artists. To hide from their predators- or their prey- they can eject a cloud of ink, bury themselves in the sand, change color, or even make their skin bioluminesce, emit light like a firefly.à Skin color changes are engineered by expanding or contracting pigment-filled bags in the skin called chromatophores. Cephalopods move through the water in two ways. Traveling tail-first, they move by flapping their fins and arms. Traveling head first, they move by jet propulsion: muscles fill their mantle with water and then expel it in a burst that propels them forward. Squids are the fastest of any marine creature. Some species can move in bursts up to 26 feet per second, and in sustained migrations for up 1 foot per second. Reproduction Cephalopods have both male and female sexes, and mating usually includes a courtship often involving skin color changes, varying with the species. Some species of cephalopods gather together in great masses to mate. The male transfers a sperm packet to the female through her mantle opening via either a penis or a modified arm; the females are polyandrous, meaning they can be fertilized by multiple males. The females lay large yolky eggs in clusters on the ocean floor, creating 5 to 30 egg capsules with four to six embryos each. In many species, males and females both die shortly after spawning. Octopus females, however, stop eating but live on to watch over their eggs, keeping them clean and protecting them from predators. Gestation periods can last for months, depending on species and conditions: one deep-sea octopus, Graneledone boreopacifica, has a gestation period of four and a half years. Identifying the young of different cephalopod species is difficult. Some juvenile cephalopods swim freely and feed on marine snow (bits of food fragments in the water column) until they mature, while others are adept predators at birth.à Conservation Status There are 686 species listed in the class Cephalopoda in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. One species is listed as Critically Endangered (Opisthoteuthis chathamensis), two are Endangered (O. mero and Cirroctopus hochbergi), two are Vulnerable (O. calypso and O. massyae) and one is Near Threatened (Giant Australian Cuttlefish, Sepia apama). Of the rest, 304 are Least Concern and 376 are Data Deficient. The Opisthoeuthis genus of octopus live in the most shallow waters of the oceans, and they are the species which is most threatened by commercial deep-water trawling.à Cephalopods reproduce rapidly and over-fishing is not typically a problem. Nacre from the nautilus is prized in the United States and elsewhere, and although nautiluses are not listed in the IUCN Red List, they have been protected under the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) since 2016.à Sources Bartol, Ian K., et al.
